N288 Police Inspectors & Captains & Chiefs of the Fire Departments

This beautiful 95-card set of police and firemen was issued in 1888 by Buchner with their "One of the Finest" tobacco. 62 of the same subjects were included in the smaller format N284 series in the same year. New York City (i.e., Manhattan) and Brooklyn have the greatest representation, with the rest from towns in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Most of the firemen are from outside of New York. Their cards are more difficult to find than the police, which may indicate that they were issued last. I bought my first two at a Ft. Washington show in 2001 and have been picking them up mostly one-by-one over the past five years.

The backs of the cards come in two formats; the more common one mentions the fire chiefs as well as the police. Other card sets from the same era show the photos used as the basis for N288's portraits. Prices today for N288's usually range from $50 to $200, based on condition.
